Ultra Runner, Average Joe's and an Erotic Novelist
Hello, Imposters!
This Imposter Newsletter is going to look a little different…for the better, I hope (It’s going to be really awkward if it’s shit).
My name is SJ Brand – some of you may know me from my two-episode podcast with your favourite Imposters, Al and Burso. Some of you may also know me from my series of Erotic/Fantasy books, The Stained Series (available to purchase from Amazon in paperback and eBook – don’t mind the shameless plug).
In my episodes of the Imposter Podcast (episode 16 and episode 17) I chatted about how I got into writing and a little about the genre I write in. Al and Burso set me the challenge of starting a Patreon page to help me on my journey. The aim of the Patreon page was to offer my readers some extra content like audio-recorded chapters, and in turn, raise money to help me pay for an editor. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed recording chapters of my most recent and un-published book, A Fracture of Light and Shadow.

I have loved the challenges Al and Burso have set for guests of their pod, and am looking forward to the outcome of some of them. In saying that…
Burso, where is the poem you were supposed to write and read out?????
Imposter Fitzy
I recently co-hosted an episode of The Imposter and had the absolute pleasure of chatting with Jason and Joey from The Average Joes. I’ll talk a little more about that later, but for now, I’d like to bring you back to the podcast Al and Burso did with Fitzy, the Ultra Marathon runner.
To say listening to Fitzy talk about running 100km and 160km races wowed me, would be an understatement. I cannot fathom how a human being can run that kind of distance. It blew my mind. Now, I enjoy setting myself physical goals – like carrying seven bags of groceries in from the car all at once, or my recent challenge of being able to do a chin-up (Yes, I said a chin-up. One), but to listen to this bloke talk about running 160km like it was as simple as doing the push-up challenge, left me speechless.
A few things I took away from the podcast with Fitzy were:
You don’t need to be an elite athlete to have a goal and work towards it. Fitzy started out riding bikes and progressed to running short distances before stepping up to marathons and then ultra marathons.
You don’t need to be a certain body type to run these distances. I always imagined these kinds of runners to be lanky limbed, stick-thin athletes. Fitzy talked about all of the different kinds of people partaking in these runs (If you listened to Podapolooza 3, you would have even heard him mention a blind woman who ran over 60km!).
Even ultra-marathon runners lose motivation and fitness. Hearing Fitzy talk about how he struggled in 2023 with his motivation, really struck a chord with me. I loved hearing how he set himself a goal of running 5km a day to get his fitness back on track.
There are marathons held at Disney Land! Who would have thought?!
Imposter Joe’s
Next up, the Imposter Podcast (with myself co-hosting with Al – and several cameos by Burso, because let’s be honest, he can’t help himself) chatted with Jason and Joe from The Average Joes, an inspiring group of veterans from the Ringwood RSL.
I thoroughly enjoyed talking to these blokes because I knew absolutely nothing about the Veteran Games. Even though the message behind the Veteran Games is a serious one, there were so many laugh-out-loud moments in this pod, and the love these guys have for one another is truly heartwarming.
A few things I took away from the podcast with the Average Joes were:
If you find yourself meeting a veteran, be respectful with your questions. These men and women have served their country and the sacrifices that come along with that service are varying. If your first question is a silly one, instead of a respectful one – perhaps check yourself.
Other RSLs really need to have a look at what the Ringwood RSL is doing by way of supporting veterans in the Veteran Games and offer similar support.
Burso would rather film his teammates doing the heavy lifting than do it himself.
If you are a large redhead or a diabetic, perhaps do a little planning before partaking in a 21km Spartan Race.
If you use a hairdryer to dry your combat boots, don’t leave it sitting in the boot while it’s on – especially if said hairdryer belongs to the hotel you’re staying in.
I hope you’ve enjoyed my take on the last few pods with this edition of the Imposter Newsletter. It was an honour to be asked to offer my insights as part of the Imposter Community.
